Stop Overpaying for Brand-Name IR Lamps
Let’s be honest. Most people buying infrared heating elements for fruit drying lines are terrified of switching to a domestic brand. There’s this lingering fear that the new lamp won’t fit, or worse, it’ll pop and burn out in a week, leaving you with a dead production line. But here’s the thing: when you strip away the fancy logo, it all comes down to three simple things. The light output, the size, and the power. The “Will it Actually Fit?” Problem If you want a lamp that just slides right in, the footprint has to be spot on. We spend a lot of time obsessing over the quartz tube diameter and those end-caps. If you’re dealing with R7s or SK15 connectors, there’s zero room for error. Even a single millimeter off means you’re stuck fighting with the housing or hacking away at your wiring just to get it to stay. Nobody has time for that. And then there’s the power. If your machine is built for 230V/1500W, you can’t just throw in any lamp. If the resistance is too low, you’ll pull too much current. Then you’re not drying fruit—you’re tripping breakers. What’s Actually Inside We use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because you want that short-wave infrared to actually get into the fruit. You’re trying to dry the inside, not just scorch the skin and ruin the batch. We also fill them with halogen gas, which basically pushes the tungsten back onto the wire. It’s what keeps the filament from snapping prematurely. One thing to keep an eye on: heat density. A high-wattage tube in a tiny space puts out an intense amount of heat. It’s great for speed, but it’s hard on your reflectors. If your reflectors are old, pitted, or oxidized, that heat bounces right back into the tube. That’s usually why lamps burn out early. It’s often not the lamp’s fault—it’s the mirror. Making the Switch You don’t need to tear your whole system apart to save some money. As long as the electrical load is balanced, domestic lamps do the job. Just double-check your connector type and the length before you order. And a quick tip: if you move to a higher-output lamp, you might need to tweak your PID controller settings. You don’t want to accidentally cook your product.
