Stop Overpaying for Your Food Line IR Lamps
Let’s be honest: some food machinery OEMs charge an absolute fortune for replacement IR lamps. It’s frustrating. We get calls from engineers all the time asking the same thing: “Can I just use a domestic lamp, or am I going to wreck my production line?” The short answer? You can. But you have to get the physics right first. The Electrical Side of Things If you don’t want to spend your weekend rewiring a control cabinet, your voltage and wattage need to be a perfect match. Here’s the thing: if you swap a 230V lamp for a 200V one on the same transformer, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll spike the current and fry the filament way sooner than you should. That’s why we build our lamps to match the exact wattage-per-centimeter of your original. It keeps the heat steady across the conveyor belt. No cold spots. No half-dried food. No wasted batches. Glass, Coatings, and the Little Details Most food-grade lamps use high-purity quartz. We use halogen-filled tubes because they actually last. Depending on what you’re processing, we can add a thin-film coating to the glass. This is a big deal because it stops the lamp from just scorching the surface of the food and actually pushes the heat deeper into the product. And please, double-check your connectors—usually R7s or SK15. If the pin spacing is off by even a tiny bit, you’ll stress the sockets. In the best case, it won’t fit. In the worst case, you get an arc flash. Not a great way to start a shift. The Reality of Installation A “perfect fit” only happens if the length and the lead wires are identical. But there’s one more thing to watch out for: heat. High-wattage tubes get incredibly hot. If you decide to bump up the power density during a replacement, your old cooling fans might not be able to keep up. You could end up warping the housing or messing with your sensors. Just make sure you have some thermal breathing room before you go for a higher-wattage option.
