
Getting More Out of Your Sidel SBO6: A Quick Fix for Your Heating Elements
If you’re running an older SBO6, you know the headache of inconsistent heating. You look at your PET bottles and see those annoying thin spots or “pearling” on the walls. It’s frustrating. Usually, the problem isn’t the machine itself—it’s just that your old infrared lamps have lost their punch and aren’t hitting the wattage they used to. The good news? You don’t have to rip out the whole oven to speed things up. You can just swap in some high-density heater lamps and get your throughput back up. How it actually works We build these lamps to hit the “sweet spot” of PET resin. By using a halogen-filled quartz tube, we pack the energy into shortwave infrared radiation. Essentially, the heat sinks into the preform wall much faster. When you move to a high-wattage lamp, the preforms don’t need to sit in the oven nearly as long. It’s a simple shift that lets you run the line faster. The fit (No headaches here) These are drop-in replacements. We use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors, so they plug right into your existing wiring just like the original parts. We also reinforced the quartz glass. These things take a beating from constant heating and cooling, so they need to be tough. We usually spec them for high-voltage setups to keep the current draw low while still cranking out the heat you need. One quick warning:**Check your measurements.**Double-check the tube length and voltage before you buy. If you’re off by even 5mm, the lamp won’t sit right in the socket. And a loose lamp is a great way to start an electrical arc, which is the last thing you want on your floor. The catch: Watch your heat Here’s the thing. More wattage means more BTUs hitting your plastic every second. Your preforms will heat up faster, but your cooling system has to keep up. If your vents are clogged or your blow-off air is weak, you’ll end up scorching the neck of the preform. It’s a balancing act. You’ve got to make sure your airflow can handle the extra power, or you’ll just be trading one problem for another.
