
Can new IR lamps actually save your old SMF blow molders?
Let’s be honest: a lot of shops are running SMF machines that have seen better days. You know the feeling. Cycle times start to crawl, the bottle walls look uneven, and suddenly you’re staring at a production bottleneck. The gut reaction is usually to just bite the bullet and buy a new machine. But before you drop that kind of cash, try this: just swap out the infrared (IR) heating elements. It’s a surprisingly simple fix that often solves the whole problem. Why your old lamps are lying to you Here is the thing about old lamps—they lose their punch. As the filament ages, the heat doesn’t hit the same way. Your PET preforms might look okay on the surface, but they aren’t hitting the right temperature in the center. It’s like trying to cook a steak on a dying grill. When you slide in some fresh, high-wattage shortwave IR lamps, you’re basically cranking up the heat flux. Suddenly, you can either speed up the conveyor to get more bottles out the door or drop the oven temp to stop wasting electricity. The “Don’t Mess This Up” Specs If you’re doing a drop-in replacement, the fit has to be spot on. No hacking, no forcing it. We really look at three things: voltage, wattage, and the connector. If you’re pushing higher wattage into a high-voltage setup, just make sure your wiring can actually handle the draw. If you ignore this, you’re looking at burnt-out sockets or a tripped breaker right in the middle of a shift. Stick with standard R7s or SK15 bases. It makes the wiring a breeze since you won’t have to mess with the lamp holders. The Trade-off We use quartz glass with special coatings that push the heat forward into the preform instead of letting it soak into the oven walls. It’s way more efficient. But there’s a catch. More heat density means your cooling fans have to work harder. If you go too crazy with the wattage, your oven housing is going to feel the heat, and you might fry your nearby sensors. Balance is key. Is it worth it? Look, new lamps aren’t a magic wand. If your machine is mechanically falling apart, a new bulb isn’t going to save you. But if the machine is solid and your heaters are just dim, fresh IR tubes bring that thermal profile back to life. It’s the fastest way to get your production numbers back up without tearing up the entire shop floor.
